Meet Mike, the chicken who lived without head for 18 months
New Delhi: In a bizarre case, a chicken in US lived for one and a half years without its head.
According to reports, in Michigan, a chicken named Mike was beheaded by owner Lloyd Olsen for evening meal on September 10, 1945.
However, Lloyd observed that the axe missed the jugular vein, leaving one ear and most of the brain stem unharmed.
Moreover, Mike was so fortunate that the blood clot prevented Mike from bleeding to death.
Surprisingly, the chicken was not killed.
Thereafter, Mike was taken to the University of Utah in Salt Lake City by Lloyd for study. After that, Mike was photographed by all the famous papers and magazines. He was making his owners $4,500 per month.
Mike’s fame led to a string of people trying to cut off their birds head just the same way. One of the copycat beheaded chickens lived for eleven days, but the rest died quickly.
Now, Mike’s spirit is celebrated every year at the “Mike the Headless Chicken” Festival, the third weekend in May.
