Gorakhpur Tragedy: BRD Medical College principal suspended

New Delhi: Gorakhpur's Baba Raghav Das Medical college is making headline with its increase in death toll of patients reportedly due to disruptive oxygen supply. In view of the same, the principal of the medical college has been sacked for "megligent behaviour".

After taking stock of the situation which lead to death of 30 infants and children in 48 hours with Health Minister Siddharth Nath Singh, UP Minister for Medical Education Ashutosh Tandon announced their action against the principal in a press conference.

"High-level probe, headed by Principal Secretary, is underway. Till then we are suspending the principal of the college with immediate effect," Tandon said.

However, on the other hand, the college principal claims that "he had resigned prior to being suspended".

According to officials, 17 children died in the neo-natal ward, five in the AES (Acute Encephalitis Syndrome) ward and eight in the general ward within 48 hours.

Due to delay in payment to the vendor by the college authorities lead to the lack of supply, as per the Medical Education Bureau a probe had been ordered to find out the reasons.

"The oxygen supplier company claims that it had approached the health department on August 1 for payment of its dues, to which the department had released funds and informed BRD Medical College for payment on August 5. The supplier later claimed that the funds were transferred only on August 11," Tandon said.

"In 2014 the college had an average of 19 deaths per day, in 2015 it was 22 deaths per day and in 2016 it was 19 deaths per day," State Health Minister Siddharth Nath Singh said.

However, taking on the issue of shortage of Oxygen gas supply in the hospital, Singh said that the children had not died due to disruption of gas supply.

"There was no shortage of oxygen in the hospital. For two hours, there was shortage of emergency cylinders, during which manual resuscitation procedure was carried out," the Health Minister said.
