Gandhinagar, March 30: Gujarat has been rocked yet again by a dalit atrocity case. In a shocking incident a 21-year old dalit youth has been hacked to death for a riding a horse. Family of the deceased has accused upper caste community of the village for the murder. Family of the victim, Pradip Rathod, has said that the upper caste youth had threatened them to stop Pradip for riding a horse in the village. When the incident took place Pradip was riding a horse way back to home from his farm on Thursday evening, local media reports said.
Pradip belonged to Timbi village of Bhavnagar district. Pradip's father Kalubhai Rathod told mediapersons that he had purchased the horse for his son about four months ago, and a about a week ago the family was threatened. “They said that a Dalit should not ride a horse as no Dalits in Timbi and surrounding villages own a horse,” said Kalubhai. With a population of around 5000, Timbi is dominated by Darbars or Kshatriyas. About 40 dalit families stay in this village.
In its complaint, the family has alleged that one Natubha Darbar, along with his friends, had threatened them when they had purchased a horse for Rs 30,000 for Pradip. When the victim's family refused to cremate the deceased, the police swung into action and arrested the three accused, media reports said. Local police said that a case of murder has been registered against Natubha Darbar and his two associates.
