Argentina gains top spot in Group D by a three-goal win
Argentina clenched a quarterfinal victory against Venezuela with a smooth 3-0 win over Bolivia in the Copa America Centenario on Tuesday. First-half goals from Erik Lamela, Ezequiel Lavezzi and Victor Cuesta sealed the win, confirming top spot in Group D with a total of nine points.
Argentina started out strongly and took the lead in the 13th minute when Edward Zenteno crudely brought down Lavezzi and Lamela’s free kick went in via a deflection off Yasmani Duk in the wall.
Argentina finished having had 82 percent of possession, completing 757 passes to Bolivia’s 61.
Messi whipped a free kick just wide, nutmegged Lampe having been flagged offside and then shot just over from long range with the keeper off his line, but the match had long since dissolved into an exhibition. The crowd could not get enough of their superstar in action.
With their spot in the quarterfinals already confirmed, coach Gerardo Martino elected to make six changes from the lineup that defeated Panama 5-0, but that did not mean it was a weakened team.
Where Argentina remained forceful in clasping their win, Bolivia also held firm in defense, keeping the score to a respectable 3-goal margin.
