Saif Ali Khan may be stripped off Padma award
New Delhi: Padma Shri awardee Saif Ali Khan may lose the coveted civic honour for his involvement in an assault case in Mumbai last year. The Mumbai Police had charged the Bollywood actor in the alleged brawl case in a restaurant there.
The Union Home Ministry has asked the Mumbai Police to expedite the matter as it has been pending since the past seven months.
The Home Ministry’s reply was sought from an RTI activist who wanted to know why Khan has not been stripped off the coveted civic honour despite a Mumbai court framing charges against him. In its response, the Union Home Ministry claimed that it was still awaiting a report from Mumbai Police. “As regard to Saif Ali Khan, no response to this Ministry’s letter No 1/3112014-Public dated August 20, 2014 has been received from Mumbai Police. Mumbai Police has been reminded to expedite the matter…,” the Ministry said in its response to RTI activist Subhash Agrawal.
Agrawal had claimed that Khan was recommended for Padma award despite several criminal cases filed against him. “Film-actor is already facing several other criminal cases against him. An RTI response revealed that Saif Ali Khan, involved in many criminal cases, was recommended for Padma awards by ‘Awards Committee’ in its meeting without mentioning name of member of committee having recommended his name,” Agrawal complained and demanded Home Ministry take back the award.
